Top Fuel CrossFit Valparaiso

about-1

CrossFit can look intimidating from the outside, especially when the version people tend to see involves elite athletes performing at an exceptionally high level. At Top Fuel CrossFit Valparaiso, the everyday experience is much more approachable. Owner Chris Shimley believes strength and fitness can be adapted to the person, whether someone has spent years training or is stepping into a gym for the first time.

Chris grew up playing football and was introduced to Olympic weightlifting while still in high school. He discovered CrossFit during his senior year and continued with it as he moved into collegiate football. After spending a summer training heavily with CrossFit and arriving well prepared for his conditioning test, he became convinced that the approach worked. As his interest in football faded, CrossFit became a bigger part of his life. He eventually opened Top Fuel CrossFit Valparaiso with a friend, and after steadily growing the gym, later bought out his partner and took over.

Over time, Chris also came to appreciate how adaptable the training could be. The same basic principles that helped him as an athlete could be adjusted for someone who wants to carry groceries more easily, work in the yard, or simply become stronger for everyday life.

That belief shapes how Top Fuel introduces people to CrossFit. The process begins with a conversation about what someone wants to accomplish and why it matters to them. New members then receive one-on-one coaching that allows them to learn movements at an appropriate pace before moving into group classes. Workouts can be adjusted for different abilities, so people can train alongside one another even when their experience and goals are very different.

Top Fuel also offers personal and small-group training along with nutrition coaching, but community is a particularly important part of the experience. Members encourage one another, and those who have been there longer often remember what it was like to be new themselves. That gives newcomers another layer of support alongside the coaching and accountability they receive.

For Chris, some of the most rewarding results happen beyond the gym. One newer member let him know that he had passed his Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) after training at Top Fuel for a few months, allowing him to move forward toward becoming a firefighter. Chris also hears from parents and grandparents who are better able to keep up with their families. Those moments reflect what he values most about the work: helping people build strength that carries into the rest of their lives.

I was looking for something different than a lonely workout at a commercial gym, so I came to Top Fuel in 2022 with a friend who was already a member. I was hooked after the very first session.

Even before I was a member and knowing only a single person, I was instantly met with multiple people offering advice and encouragement throughout that first workout (“Manion,” which is probably not a great idea for a first workout, but it was my choice!). I didn’t just find a new place to exercise; I discovered a genuine community—a group looking to better themselves and help others do the same.

Since joining, I’ve learned skills I never would have attempted elsewhere and gained the confidence to step outside my comfort zone, even participating in public competitions. The programming here is consistently fun yet challenging. The coaches are all incredibly attentive and helpful when it comes to refining complex movements or learning a new skill.

But most importantly, the friends I’ve made here have become the closest group of people my family interacts with. Top Fuel is no longer just a gym for me; it’s a second home that my whole family has come to love.
