For Dr. Kurt Halum, caring for children means looking beyond the immediate dental problem and considering how oral health is connected to a child’s overall growth and development. Over time, that broader perspective has come to shape Dentistry For Children, along with an emphasis on helping young patients feel comfortable and understood.

Dr. Halum grew up in Munster and attended Indiana University Northwest, where he earned a degree in chemistry. His work with polymers sparked an interest in the science used in dentistry, eventually leading him to earn his DMD and pursue pediatric dental training through Loyola University and Mott and Hurley Medical Center. He later worked with the craniofacial cleft palate team at the University of Chicago before focusing fully on the pediatric practice he had established near where he grew up.

Dr. Halum believes every child should be approached according to their own needs. Some settle in quickly, while others need more time, explanation, or reassurance. He gets down to a child’s level, uses language they can understand, and helps them relate what is happening to something familiar. Families often describe gentle, patient experiences in which nervous children become comfortable with going to the dentist.

That same thinking guides treatment decisions. Dr. Halum considers age, behavior, growth, development, bite, airway, and long-term needs rather than looking at a tooth in isolation. He also wants parents to understand the reasoning behind treatment and believes decisions should reflect what each child actually needs. His continuing education has included sleep and breathing, orofacial myofunctional therapy, and pediatric airway orthodontics.

Questions that developed over years of practice also led Dr. Halum to create Beyond Dentistry for Children in a separate space next door to the main practice. While Dentistry For Children handles routine pediatric dental needs, the additional office allows for more specialized care involving sedation, airway and growth-focused treatment, and tie releases.

Dr. Halum is quick to credit the people around him. Some longtime team members have worked alongside him for almost two decades. Pediatric dentist Dr. Juaquan Savage is also part of the practice. Dr. Halum sees his energy, knowledge, honesty, and commitment to children as an important part of carrying the practice forward.

One lesson from Dr. Halum’s training still sums up the philosophy behind his work. He recalls a professor telling him, “Don’t be a tooth carpenter. Be a doctor of the mouth.” For Dr. Halum, that means looking beyond an individual tooth, asking questions, and considering how a child’s oral health, growth, and development fit together.
