JR’s Custom Cabinets
JR’s Custom Cabinets is rooted in a family history that goes back generations. Founder JR Mitsch grew up on a dairy farm first started by Augustine Mitsch in 1865, where working with his hands was part of everyday life. His interest in woodworking began through projects around the farm, continued through high school woodworking classes, and eventually led him into the craft full-time.
More than three decades ago, JR began building cabinets in the basement of his home. In those early years, he took on one project at a time and went door to door looking for opportunities to earn people’s trust. The work grew from there through customer referrals and a reputation for quality. Even as the business expanded over the years, the foundation remained the same: building custom cabinetry around the needs of each customer.
That custom approach shapes the entire experience. Customers work through wood choices, door styles, finishes, hardware, layout, and design details with JR and his team. JR knows that many customers do not fully know what they want until they can see it, touch it, and talk it through. That is why the process includes samples, clear design conversations, and a chance to walk through the shop to see how the cabinets are built, finished, assembled, and prepared.
For JR, the work has always been about people as much as woodworking. Many customers return when building another home and say their cabinets still look as good as they did long after installation. That kind of lasting satisfaction reflects the care behind the work and the attention given to every stage of the process. JR speaks about longtime customers like family, and that sense of familiarity carries through the business.
Today, JR’s Custom Cabinets remains focused on craftsmanship, customer care, and making sure each project is done right. The business is now carried forward by JR, longtime team member Joe Long, and JR’s son, Kyle Mitsch, who joined after returning from the Marines. Joe first started working with JR when he was 18, and over time both Joe and Kyle became equal partners along with JR. Together, they continue the steady, hands-on approach that helped JR’s Custom Cabinets grow through word of mouth, long-term relationships, and a woodworking tradition that began on a family farm generations ago.
