Leni’s Pilates
What started as a Pilates class with a friend eventually led Ellen Nowlin in a new direction. She had never been especially drawn to group fitness and had often felt that certain workout environments seemed suited to a particular body type. Pilates felt different. She found it welcoming and challenging, while also connecting with the strength work, flexibility, and mobility she already valued.
She kept going and eventually began practicing four to six times a week. As Pilates became a bigger part of her life, Ellen was also beginning to think differently about a corporate career that had spanned years in human resources and talent management and required about three hours of commuting each day. She wanted to work closer to home and was ready for something different. After thinking about the idea for more than two years, she left the corporate world and took the leap into creating Leni’s Pilates.
The name reaches back to her family. Both of Ellen’s grandmothers are named Eleni, and both were affectionately called Leni by their husbands. The two women grew up as neighbors in the same village in Greece, immigrated separately to the United States, and later became family when their children married. Ellen, who was named after them, credits her grandmothers with helping shape her and remembers the strong circles of family, friends, and community they built around themselves. The name is also a nod to both of her grandfathers and the close relationships Ellen associates with all four of them.
That sense of warmth and connection carries into the studio Ellen wanted to create. The space is light-filled, modern, filled with plants, and roomy enough for people to move comfortably around the reformers. Just as important to Ellen was making it feel approachable. She wanted people of different ages, body types, fitness levels, and backgrounds to be able to walk through the door without feeling that Pilates was meant for someone else.
Reformer Pilates, Mat Pilates, yoga, and private or semi-private sessions provide different ways to build strength, flexibility, mobility, and confidence. Instruction is clear and attentive, with help on form and modifications that allow people to work at their own level. Someone completely new can learn without feeling out of place, while someone with more experience can still expect to be challenged.
Ellen also points out that Pilates is not only for women and is much more than just stretching. Reformer Pilates uses resistance and strength work and can challenge people who already have experience with other forms of exercise. At the same time, it places an emphasis on flexibility, mobility, and core strength.
Ellen’s philosophy centers on practice over performance and progress over perfection. Her focus is not simply on personal records or achieving a particular look. She talks instead about functional strength and being able to use what you build in the studio in everyday life. That could mean carrying groceries, picking up a child or grandchild, walking a few miles, or simply feeling more capable in the way your body moves.
What Ellen enjoys most is seeing relationships develop around the studio. In one case, two teachers who met through classes gradually became friends. Through that friendship, one learned about an opportunity in another school district, applied, and ultimately made a career move she was happy with. Ellen later received a photo of the two of them together at orientation, each with a Leni’s Pilates sticker on a water bottle.
Stories like that represent what Ellen hoped the studio could become. People get to know one another, bring friends and family into something they have come to enjoy themselves, and form connections that extend beyond a class. For a studio named in honor of grandparents who helped show Ellen the importance of family and community, that sense of connection is especially fitting. The workout matters, but so does creating a place where people can feel comfortable, cared for, and supported as they become stronger in their own way.

I came in for a personal reformer session and was impressed. Ellen, the owner, is incredibly knowledgeable and gives thoughtful, personalized instruction that makes you feel comfortable right away. The studio is very clean, welcoming, and set up with so much intention. I loved that the pace was tailored to me. Highly recommend!
