Walking into O’Gara & Wilson feels like stepping into a bookstore with a story to tell. Shelves filled with used, collectible, and antiquarian books invite exploration, and much of the appeal comes from the simple act of browsing. Some visitors arrive searching for a particular title, while others come to wander the shelves and see what catches their attention. Either way, the shop rewards curiosity and offers the chance to discover something unexpected.

The story of O’Gara & Wilson traces back to 1882, when Thomas Hewitt founded the original bookshop in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood. Over the years, ownership passed through several respected booksellers, including Vernor Woodworth, whose bookstore became a familiar destination for generations of University of Chicago professors and students. It was later acquired by Joseph O’Gara, a longtime Chicago bookseller who had learned the trade as an apprentice himself. Along with his apprentice Doug Wilson, O’Gara helped carry the bookstore into its next chapter. The shop became such a respected part of the bookselling world that author Saul Bellow once referred to it as “the best bookstore in America.”

Doug’s own path into the business began as a book scout. He sold books to Joseph O’Gara to help support his own book-buying habit, and O’Gara quickly recognized his eye for books. What began as a customer relationship grew into an apprenticeship, and over time Doug became an integral part of the bookstore. Today, as owner of O’Gara & Wilson, he and his wife Jill continue a bookselling tradition that stretches back more than a century.

That history is reflected throughout the bookstore today. O’Gara & Wilson is not simply a place where books are bought and sold. It is a place shaped by a deep appreciation for books and the stories they carry. Visitors often appreciate Doug’s willingness to share what he knows, answer questions, and help them navigate a collection that spans a wide range of subjects and interests. Whether someone is searching for a particular volume, building a collection, or bringing in books from a family library, they are met with the same thoughtful approach.

Just as important as the books themselves is the atmosphere Doug and Jill have created. There is room to browse, room for conversation, and room to slow down and enjoy being surrounded by books. More than a century after its beginnings in Chicago, O’Gara & Wilson continues its story in Chesterton, where Doug and Jill Wilson carry forward a bookselling tradition that has been passed from one generation to the next. Today, readers, collectors, and the simply curious can experience the enduring pleasure of discovering something unexpected among the shelves.

I found O’Hara & Wilson Antiquarian Book Sellers while looking for a place to acquire Victorian era books left by my great grandfather. The collection was extensive. I met with owner, Doug Wilson, and found a friend. Doug was a joy to work with. He was thorough and fair when evaluating the collection. He enjoyed our family stories and he shared some of his own. The prices he paid were fair. I never at any time felt I was being taken advantage of. The ultimate compliment at the end of the process was he kept a number of the books for his extensive Victorian collection. The difficult process of letting go of my collection was mitigated by his kindness.
