Patterson Integrative Medicine
Sometimes a diagnosis names the problem without fully explaining why it is happening. What may be contributing to it? What might be triggering or worsening the symptoms? Could different parts of a person’s health be connected? Those are the kinds of questions that have shaped the way Dr. Karin Patterson practices medicine and eventually led her to create Patterson Integrative Medicine.
Her path began with a strong interest in science. While studying neuropsychology and cognitive science at the University of Michigan, she became interested in the neurological side of medicine. She later spent two years doing research involving patients at the University of California, San Diego. That experience helped clarify her direction. She found that she was drawn more to working directly with patients than to the research itself.
Dr. Patterson went on to become an osteopathic physician and chose family medicine because she valued its variety. She also spent several years teaching in family medicine residency programs before practicing within a health system for 16 years.
During those years, patients increasingly asked her about nutrition, hormones, vitamins, chronic symptoms, and other areas that received relatively little attention in her conventional medical training. The questions interested her as well, so she pursued advanced fellowship training and board certification through the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). She gradually incorporated what she was learning into her work, and the additional perspective changed the way she thought about patient care.
Over time, however, the structure of an insurance-based practice placed limits on how much time and flexibility she could have with patients, particularly when working through more complex concerns. Dr. Patterson wanted the freedom to spend more time understanding the individual and exploring areas that did not always fit easily into the traditional visit structure. Opening Patterson Integrative Medicine allowed her to step outside that model and create a practice built around that approach.
At Patterson Integrative Medicine, the person’s full health story is an important starting point. Dr. Patterson takes time to go through medical history, symptoms, previous treatments, lifestyle, priorities, and what someone most wants to address. Depending on the situation, that may lead to additional testing and consideration of nutrition, hormones, medications, supplements, exercise, and other factors that may be connected.
Integrative medicine, as Dr. Patterson practices it, does not mean rejecting conventional treatment. She prescribes medication when appropriate and views functional and integrative medicine as complementary to conventional care. Her focus is on looking more deeply at what may be contributing to a problem and exploring connections that might otherwise be overlooked.
For people dealing with complicated or persistent concerns, that means having room for a more detailed conversation. Dr. Patterson listens carefully, keeps track of details, answers questions, and explains the reasoning behind her recommendations. Rather than moving everyone through the same process, she considers what makes sense for the individual and includes the patient in deciding what deserves attention first.
That combination of thoroughness and personal attention has helped build lasting trust. Some families have relied on Dr. Patterson’s care for many years, appreciating her patience, compassion, and willingness to keep looking when the answer is not immediately clear.
Dr. Patterson also continues to study an area of medicine that is constantly developing. She stays engaged with ongoing education and emerging approaches while remaining careful about evidence and patient safety. It reflects the same curiosity that has followed her throughout her career: listen closely, keep learning, and look at the larger picture when helping someone understand and address what may be affecting their health.

Dr. Patterson is attentive, thorough, and easy to talk to. She takes the time to explain the why behind her recommendations, answers questions, and works with you to find an approach that fits your life.
She is also very responsive through the patient portal and does a great job keeping track of the details which is impressive.
I feel heard, informed, and involved in my care. Highly recommend.
