Some pets arrive ready to explore, while others need time to watch, listen, and decide that a new place feels safe. At Sunny Paws, owner Kayla Butterfield allows for both. Her approach is built around patience, individual attention, and recognizing that comfort looks different for every animal.

Kayla’s connection to animals began during her childhood in Wisconsin. Her grandmother worked in wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, and Kayla grew up helping care for raccoons, deer, birds, reptiles, dogs, cats, and many other animals. She later volunteered with an animal rescue while working as an elementary school teacher.

Before Kayla took over and renamed the business Sunny Paws, the kennel was known as Sonja’s Karing Kennels for more than 20 years. Sonja wanted to place it in the hands of someone she trusted to continue the attentive care families had come to expect. Kayla has carried that foundation forward while gradually adding her own experience, creativity, and approach. Kayla’s significant other, Patrick, is also occasionally around the kennel helping with maintenance or visiting the animals, and together they have five rescue pets of their own.

During her teaching career, Kayla worked with children with special needs and learned early that no two students respond in exactly the same way. She applies that understanding when meeting a new pet, paying close attention to what the animal is communicating and allowing trust to develop without forcing the interaction.

Dogs are the primary guests, but Sunny Paws has also welcomed cats, ferrets, hedgehogs, bearded dragons, rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small household pets. Animals from different households are kept apart. Dogs have indoor kennels and private fenced outdoor areas, while pets from the same family may stay together when appropriate.

Although Sunny Paws is not a nonprofit, Kayla helps community members facing difficult circumstances through an effort she calls Spread the Sunshine. When space allows, she has provided temporary care for pets during emergencies or housing instability.

Kayla’s background as a teacher also appears in the fun she brings to each stay. She plans themed activities, treat-based games, special snacks, paintings, paw prints, and personalized keepsakes. Owners receive regular photos, videos, and updates, allowing them to remain connected without having to wonder how their pets are doing.

A Rainbow Bridge wall honors pets who have passed away, allowing families who later return to see that their pets are memorialized there.

Sunny Paws is a place where animals are treated as individuals and families can feel confident that their pets are known, understood, and genuinely cared for. Kayla has shaped the kennel around patience, creativity, community-minded care, and an understanding of both animals and the people who love them.

Our two girls are our babies. At ages 9 & 11, they’d only been watched in-home by family in the past, specifically our grown son. Our son now lives in So. FL and we were attending his wedding.
We had boarding booked and then found Sunny Paws!
Because Kayla & Sunny Paws ooze caring and compassion, even in print, we knew upon finding Sunny Paws, that they were the best match for our girls.
Such an amazing, caring facility!!!
One of our dogs is not an immediate fan of most people. She is very routine oriented, a true pack anima,l and a home body.
While we were initially nervous to board our girls, finding Sunny Paws and meeting Kayla changed that immediately!
We flew to FL without a concern as we knew the dogs were with a knowledgeable, trustworthy, compassionate, boarding facility!
While we’d experienced our larger dog not eating on vacations with us and expected that … IT DID NOT HAPPEN @ SUNNY PAWS!! This nervous 9 years I old shepherd-pit mix ate! And we were told she was eating via daily report cards!
Pictures and daily briefs are so helpful to your sanity while away. Yet rest assured, if something comes up, like out big girl showing signs of a UTI the day before we returned, you’ll get a call!! This isn’t something our dog hasn’t had before, so tbh, we felt bad for Kayla that our girl had to get one while boarding! Sunny Paws handled everything professionally and we had no worries!!!
I admit, I love that Sunny Paws offers extras – walks, ear cleaning and other one-on-one time options for a small additional fee. You obviously do not need to add extras!! But with this being the first time our babies boarded and the one being extra needy and nervous, this was so helpful! It also allowed our big girl to bond more with her caregiver at Sunny Paws.
The best (or worst?) thing I can say about Sunny Paws in Rensselaer, is that my biggest baby seems to be missing being there! Sure she missed us and wanted to be home. After a day or two though, she’s quite obviously looking to go somewhere and she’s NOT a huge fan of car rides.
We walk our girls on leashes and in the yard daily, but didn’t have a fenced area for them… Between the time spent freely in a fenced area at Sunny Paws, the one-on-one time, the extras (like lick mats or movie/cuddle time), the smells and sights of other dogs and so on….. We’re convinced that our old girls are asking to go back!!! How awesome is that!?
The 2 video clips show the fawn colored dog, our very anxious baby, begging unusually, to get in the truck to go somewhere.
With this being new behavior… We really believe she’s wanting to go to Sunny Paws 🐾. How cool is that!?
