A custom home takes shape long before the first wall goes up. For Vic Roberts, it begins with listening carefully, understanding how someone wants to live, and turning those ideas into a design that makes sense both on paper and once construction begins. That connection between design and building has become a defining part of how Vic Roberts Design Build Homes works.

Vic studied construction management at Purdue University and began his career working on large commercial projects before returning home to build houses. His father, Tom Roberts, helped him get started and remained an important part of the business, while Vic’s mother, Lou Roberts, handled the books for many years. Vic also spent about two years learning alongside longtime local builder Knoefel Jones, who took him under his wing before Vic went out on his own.

Drafting eventually became one of Vic’s greatest strengths. Being able to design homes himself gives him the chance to work through ideas directly with customers while also thinking ahead to how each decision will affect construction. By the time the plans are complete, Vic already knows the home in considerable detail. That familiarity carries onto the job site, where he remains closely involved rather than managing everything from a distance.

That personal involvement matters during a process that naturally brings plenty of decisions and changes along the way. Vic is known for being patient, available, and easy to work with, helping customers work through those decisions as their plans take shape. The craftsmanship matters, but so does making the experience feel steady and manageable. Some customers have returned to Vic years later for another home or additional work, reflecting the trust that can develop through that kind of relationship.

Family has been woven through the business from the beginning. Vic’s wife, Veronica, eventually took over the bookkeeping from Lou and became his right hand in the business. Their children, Victoria, Tommy, Jackson, and Lily, grew up around the work and spent time on job sites when they were young. Vic speaks with heartfelt gratitude about the role his family has played in his career, making a point of recognizing not only their help, but also the time and sacrifices that came with supporting a home-building business over the years.

What continues to mean the most to Vic is seeing people’s ideas become real. He enjoys sharing in the excitement as a home takes shape and, later, seeing families settle into spaces he helped create. For Vic, that is one of the most rewarding parts of the work: knowing that what began as a drawing has become a place where people will build their lives and memories.
